2005 Chardonnay

2007 Chardonnay, Ingrid's Vineyard

2007 was an ideal year for Central Coast winemakers. We enjoyed a long growing season with moderate temperatures and very low yields in the vineyards. This provided us with a small crop of superb grapes exhibiting highly concentrated flavors supported by a crisp, well balanced acidity.

The Ingrid’s Chardonnay is planted directly in front of Bernardus Lodge in the beautiful Carmel Valley with two Dijon clones: 76 and 95. In early 2007 we grafted 2 ½ acres of our 6 acre parcel of Ingrid’s Chardonnay to Pinot Noir, in order to have equal amounts of these two wonderful wines. This site has proven to be superb for both of these Burgundian varietals because of its deep, well-drained soils and its sunny, yet cool climate.

We ferment and age our Chardonnays in the Burgundian tradition. The grapes are very gently whole cluster pressed, then fermented in small French oak barrels. We hand stir each barrel every two weeks to increase texture and complexity, as the wine ages for nine months.

The Ingrid’s 2007 exudes a perfume of ripe fig, apple and pear with notes of crème brûlée and ginger spice. On the palate we find intense flavors that mirror the aromas and a refreshingly crisp acidity lingering on the lush, well-focused finish.
