Beginning in 2009 we have decided to bottle our Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir on its own and our other Pinot vineyards as a separate blend under the Monterey appellation.
About 70% of these grapes come from the celebrated Griva vineyard in the Arroyo Seco viticultural area; a further 22 % is from the Olson vineyard in northern Monterey County, and the balance from Carmel Valley. These three vineyard locations provide us with a lighter-bodied, well-balanced wine perfect to enjoy in its youth.
Our 2009 Monterey Pinot Noir shows a medium ruby red color with brilliant clarity. In the nose we find aromas of ripe, red cherries and raspberries with beautiful spicy accents. On the palate, the full-bodied flavors of bright red fruits fill the mouth and linger on a long, supple finish. This is a perfect wine to enjoy young with a wide variety of dishes.
At Bernardus, all our Pinot Noir grapes are hand picked, hand sorted and fermented in small batches.
We use specially selected yeasts and two different vinification techniques in order to maximize fruit expression and complexity.
