A big, broad-shouldered wine, the 2010 Chardonnay Soberanes Vineyard possesses plenty of richness and density, yet all the elements never seem to fully come together in the glass. The alcohol is a bit noticeable, especially on the finish.

Bernardus 2010 Soberanes Chardonnay (Santa Lucia Highlands) $40
There’s lots of citrusy acidity in this vineyard-designated Chardonnay, giving it the fresh bite of a green apple, pineapple and meyer lemon. This is pleasantly rich and creamy, with oak aging imparting a buttered toast note. – S. H.
